Project 1- Conceptual Editorial Illustration

Brief:
Over two weeks create a piece of conceptual illustration for a given article, that'll be designed for print and animated for a webpage.

Polly Toynbee's Article:
Banning prayer rituals in school? Just get religion out of education completely

My influences could be broken down to two main focuses, religion and school.

Religion

Thumbnailing

Here I've drawn up initial imagery, mainly school related objects

Here I've began drawing thumbnails
This thumbnails centres around the idea of cut out figures, with religion integrating itself into school.

3D or 2D?

Picture
I began experimenting with 3D elements. Playing about with 3D and 2D I decided to combine both dimensions digitally.
I thought about animating the gif using paper cutouts and moving these on the scanner. A result similar to the South Park pilot. However for my final outcome I instead scanned parts of a paper puppet than I then digitally manipulated to animate.

Stepping back and trying again

After receiving feedback, it was clear that my previous outcome was giving the wrong message, that the girl was blocking herself in with religion rather than blocking religion out. It was also pointed out that it wasn't obvious that the setting of the illustration was a school. This had to be rectified. I went back to a previous thumbnail and developed it.

Above are assets that were going to be in the  background of the final piece but ended up not relevant to the final piece.
Picture
This was the first attempt for the final outcome, I wasn't sure of the outcome and after feedback many aspects were changed. An overall reduction in what was in the illustration lead to the final outcome. This outcome was cluttered and at parts unnecessary in conveying the concept of the text, the final outcome aims to rectify this.

In the previous outcome the children were unclear in what they were holding, with the new drawn children it is clear what they are holding.

This was the final gif however after feedback it was discussed that the final worked as a gif but not a still and so when the final image was updated so was the final gif.
