Illustrator

Brief:
To create 3 enamel pins using Illustrator

During an illustrator workshop we were tasked with creating a badge design based off of a character.
I made Jareth from labyrinth played by David Bowie during this session.

Market Research

Are task was to create pins that parodied a real life property, I chose a series I watched during the summer, Lord of the Rings.
To the Right is parodied pins by Nick Moffatt, that parodies Star Wars.

'Jaz' or 'magicalmaidens' is an illustrator that is well known for being seen at markets selling pins. I myself have bought from them at a comic con in Glasgow.

'Jaz' parodies existing media by mashing Ditto the transforming Pokémon with other characters. This unifies all these different properties with one consistent, Ditto's silly face.

Design Process

Smeagol- Andy Serkis

Frodo- Elijah Wood

Sam- Sean Astin

A defining feature of Frodo is his large blue, staring, eyes. I thought this characteristic would be important in capturing Frodo in pin form.

When watching the films I felt Sam cried a lot. This was an action I thought would help identify the character in the pin lineup.

Stage 1- Pen drawing

Stage 2- Procreate (digital drawing app) drawing
A few changes were made between the pen sketch and the digital design. Originally, Smeagol was to have just the ring behind him, and Sam was to have bread that he carries in the film. I made changes because I thought the pins would be more visually tied in if aspects of Smeagol's pin and Sam's pin came together to create the backing of Frodo's pin, referencing their dynamic within the films.

For the backing I thought about different design choices, having:
-graphics on the backings that look like but aren't apart of the character, such as angel wings.
-different iconic scenes on the cards for each character.
-Having unconventional backing, mixed rotation of the backing cards.

At this point I also thought about the text that would be on the cards.
To parody the characters I gave them sillier names. Smeagol is 'Smelly', Frodo is 'Fro-oh-no' and Sam is 'Sad'.
The word 'Hobbit' was parodied into the word 'Hobisn't' and is the title/branding on each card.

The pin backings are very simple I thought with the complexity of the pins a more simple backing would be better with the backing just being block colours.

I used the font 'ringbearer' on Fontspace.com

Stage 3- Illustrator result

When using illustrator I found these tools to be most useful. Before this project I hadn't used these tools that often, but by putting time into using these tools the more comfortable I became with the program.

Mockup
During a feedback session I received the feedback that my pins would be far more effective if they looked more 3D, using this pin mockup by Aline Lima I acted on this feedback.
